Abstract: | In this report we present measurements of end-to-end message delays for various communication technologies, system topologies and communication load scenarios. Measurements cover 802.3/100BASE-TX wired Ethernet and 802.11b wireless LAN. The studied topologies include 1) point-to-point links, subnets connected by 2) hubs and 3) switches, wireless subnets in 4) infrastructure and 5) ad-hoc mode. The topologies have been evaluated on an otherwise empty medium, i.e. without any network load except the measured messages. The same measurements are repeated applying typical load conditions corresponding to high-quality MP3-compressed audio streams and simple MPEG video streams. This report describes the setup and methodology used. Then an overview of the results is given and some general observations are deduced. In the appendix, the complete results are presented in various visualizations. |
